Outdoor Recreation in the Town of Mt Laurel

Mt Laurel is designed to take full advantage of the natural beauty of the land in Birmingham, Alabama. These rolling hills, along with Birmingham's biodiversity and beautiful weather, make the town of Mt Laurel a great place to spend time outside.

There are plenty of places to enjoy outdoor activities right inside the town of Mt Laurel. Created with an eye toward conservation and preservation, the town of Mt Laurel features plenty of green spaces and outdoor amenities.

Each of these outdoor amenities lies within walking distance of each other and of all of the homes. They are connected via 5-foot-wide walking paths. Miles of hiking and foot paths traverse the town of Mt Laurel, offering outdoor exercise and a fun, healthy way to get around.

Swim

These amenities include the Olmsted Park Swimming Pool. For those not quite old enough for the pool's maximum depth of 5 feet, the kiddie pool is a more manageable one foot of water. Seating options, including tables and chairs for snacking and chaise lounges for laying out, surround the pools. The area includes restrooms and a shower outside for rising off before getting in the pool. Wooden trellises and fencing enclose the sundeck.

Spoonwood Lake, on the other side of the Town of Mt Laurel, is one of the area's few lakes for swimming and fishing. The 13.11-acre private lake features a beach and a swim-to dock that serves as a perfect diving platform for the adventurous.

Play

A tree-shaded playground with playground equipment from award-winning Landscape Structures sits right next door to the pool. The playground features two slides, climbing surfaces and monkey bars over an impact surface for the equipment and a bed of wood chips under the swings.

In 2009, neighborhood pet owners joined together to develop the Mt Laurel Dog Park. So now, even furry members of the family have their own safe place to run and play. A holding and loosing pen at the park’s entrance ensures that all dogs are kept safe while collars and leashes are removed. And while many small dogs think they can run with the big dogs, the park does offer separate play areas for smaller pups.

Compete

A 4.5-acre multi-sport playing field is adjacent to the playground. On the other side is the Olmsted Park Sports Court. It's a half-size regulation basketball court with three basketball goals. It can accommodate three simultaneous half-court games, or a full court and a half-court game. Its concrete surface can withstand any activity, including street hockey, roller skating and bike riding.

Two regulation, ClayTech-surface tennis courts are also available for residents of Mt Laurel. The tennis courts are nestled within the neighborhood, providing easy access.

Relax

Between Olmsted Park and Spoonwood Lake sits Abbott Square. Two semi-circular arbors surround a seating area enveloped with muscadine vines and shade trees. Winner of the Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects, Abbott Square offers an idyllic setting for picnics, reading and relaxation.
